Steve Martin - Atheists Don't Have No Songs

An oldie, but goodie from 2011, revived in 2014 for a PBS special =:-)

Christians have their hymns and pages.
Hava Nagila's for the Jews.
Baptists have the rock of ages.
Atheists just sing the blues...

Some folks sing a Bach cantata.
Lutherans get Christmas trees.
Atheist songs add up to nada.
But they do have Sundays free.

Pentecostals sing to heaven,
Gothics had the books of scrolls,
Numerologists count to seven,
Atheists have rock and roll...

Catholics dress up for Mass
And listen to Gregorian chants.
Atheists just take a pass.
Watch football in their underpants.

Carl Broemel - Death Is Not the End

It's ironic. Carl Broemel in 2014 is deep in the annals of "alternative". Yet, this beautiful version makes the original sound like the epitome of what could be imagined as truly "alternative", and Carl sounds as great as "pop" used to 50 years ago. Ironic is the only word for it. Ironically beautiful.

Oh, the tree of life is growing where the spirit never dies,
And the bright light of salvation shines in dark and empty skies.
When the cities are on fire with the burning flesh of men,
Just remember that death is not the end.

Ivan & Alyosha - You Changed My Life

"There was someone in my body that I could hardly see invading my privacy, making my decisions for me, holding me back, not letting me stand. Making me feel like a stranger in a strange land. But you changed my life. Came along in a time of strife. You come down the line, give me a new mind. You changed my life."

Ume - Revival b/w Within My Bones

"Apocalyptic meaning - a never ending meeting". If a Texas revival ever truly rocked liked this there would not be any lost souls left in this world. There is power in energy, and Ume has a ton of it when they incite us to "come along for the ride".

Admiral Freebee - Nothing Else to Do b/w I Don't Want to Feel Good Today

It was a tremendous, sparkling spring break, and tomorrow reality and cold oatmeal returns. Time for honest good-byes to the new friends we discovered on our journey this week. "And I fell in love with you 'cause there was nothing else to do." Will we meet again? Should we make plans? Is there really work to return to in a few hours? "I don't want to feel good today." The best thing about these songs? Although they fit this moment perfectly, they have a beat that will live on and bring back great memories for many many years to come.

Admiral Freebee - Nothing Else to Do

True Detective Soundtrack

Just knowing the show will not be on tonight gives one time to reflect. The story really wasn't that great. As a character study, however, it was fascinating, and the music enhanced the understanding of the characters. The True Detective soundtrack (HBO 2014) continues to amaze. Hopefully it will be officially released.

Sally Seltmann - Hey Daydreamer

Good popcorn for a Friday night peek. Popcorn is apt because the tune seriously pops up and down throughout with fun effect. The refrain sings with the plea "I want to go home" within the daydream. Jess Williamson - Seventh Song

“Do you know how holy it is just to sit quietly with someone?”

Dichotomy is energizing. Should I hang out by myself, or find a friend to spend the day with? Can there be a wholy in-between choice? Should I go running toward that next exciting point of light, or listen to that still quiet voice humming deep inside? This CD may have you asking those questions of yourself, or may simply please your ears with simplicity.

Mike Oldfield - Minutes b/w Dreaming in the Wind

Minutes ("Minutes seem like hours and hours seem like days when the ones you love are missing") b/w Dreaming in the Wind ("I belong to the sky. . .I'm at heaven's door") are fun guitar-based eartasters from The Man On The Rocks. The title cut was not impressive on the CD. But check out the acoustic video - the song is flavorful performed this way. It's possible the acoustic version will appear on the "deluxe" edition. We'll see. Shoutout for the final cut on the non-deluxe CD: I Give Myself Away ("I give myself away to you completely. It's true. Believe me. Here I am.").

Pink Martini & The Von Trapps - Storm b/w Friend

"I want to be one of the storms falling over the sea."
Written by 18 year old August von Trapp, Storm and Friend are the stand-out cuts on the Dream A Little Dream CD. The video is self-described as an un-arranged rough estimate of the beautiful first cut on the new CD. The rest of the CD is a foray into the past without enough update, making me wistful for the older recordings.
Pink Martini & The Von Trapps - Storm

"Desperately we chase the stars that whirl"
Pink Martini & The Von Trapps - Friend

Joe Louis Walker - Hornet's Nest b/w Don't Let Go & Ramblin' Soul

"Well, I want you to know that that I'm a jealous man
and you're about to cross the line.
'Cause when it comes to my baby,
there's a no trespassing sign.
Better not step on this hornet's nest - you'll be sorry what you've done.
'Cause if you step on this hornet's nest, man you're gonna get stung."

Show Stopping Opening

You have to wait a whole minute into the video, but there are some excellent musician moments in this show opener in Brisbane. What's amazing is that most bands would have saved this high energy blaster until the encore!

More flavors from Australia:
